There are many ways to take care of and maintain wooden cutting boards. Wood is naturally anti bacterial contrary to popular belief.

Here are some tips and tricks that you can use to ensure a long life of the product.

Cleaning and Maintenance

First things first, the cardinal sins of taking care of wood products.

The Dishwasher. The dishwasher is an incredible tool in the kitchen. But with the lots of water and the high heat inside, it will completely remove the food safe finish and will likely warp the wood, potentially ruining the piece.

Never use Vegetable oils or other cooking oils on wood products. This will lead to the product becoming rancid and will decay the product over time. Food safe Mineral Oil is required for oiling the products.

Use unscented mild dish soap for the wood products.

Instead, use these methods to maintain the a clean product and an intact finish.

Cleaning:

Hand wash the product in warm, mildly soapy water, never submerging it, and dry quickly with a towel after every use to prevent bacterial growth.

Leave the product either on its side, or stood upright as to allow the product to dry completely.

After Cleaning apply a thin layer of mineral oil if needed, but is not always necessary.

Sanitizing:

Sanitizing your product is not as daunting an some might think! You can spray on a 1:1 mixture of white vinegar and water or 3% hydrogen peroxide, wiping the product after about 5-10 minutes.

After the sanitizing it is always smart to apply a coat of food safe mineral oil to the product, and allow it to dry.

Stains:

For stains and other marks caused by food on the product, you can use a sprinkle of salt and a half of a lemon to scrub away any stains of the product.

Baking Soda is also a great tool with cleaning wood products, but will also require a mineral oil application after use of this method of cleaning.

Maintenance: Every first time purchase comes with a bottle of mineral oil

Maintenance is important to ensure the wood doesn’t dry out and is necessary to a long life of daily use!

Regularly oil the product every month or when it appears dry, with food-grade mineral oil to prevent cracking, using beeswax cream to seal it. The process takes less 5 minutes!
